How to Fill Out a PDF Form That Isn't Fillable (Free)

Updated July 31, 2026 · By the FileSnap team

Someone emails you a form as a PDF. You click the fields — nothing happens. It's a flat PDF: just an image of a form, with no interactive fields. The old answer was print it, fill it in by hand, scan it, and email it back. Here's how to type directly onto any PDF instead — including adding your signature — free, in your browser, no Adobe required.

Step-by-step: type on a non-fillable PDF

  1. Open the free PDF editor and drop in the form.
  2. Switch the toolbar to Add text mode.
  3. Click on the first blank — a text box appears right where you clicked. Type your answer.
  4. Match the look if you like: the panel lets you set size and color, so your answers can sit neatly on the form's lines.
  5. Repeat for every field — name, address, dates, checkboxes (type an X).
  6. Click Download PDF — you get a clean, filled-in form, no watermark.

Adding your signature

Most forms end with a signature line. Open your filled form in the free Sign PDF tool, draw or type your signature once, click the signature line to place it, and download. (Full walkthrough in our signing guide.)

Ready to try it? It's free — no sign-up, no credit card, no watermark, and your file never leaves your device.

What if the form has wrong pre-filled text?

If the PDF has real text (not a scan), switch to Edit mode and click the text to retype it directly — useful when a form arrives with someone else's details in it. On scanned forms, use Erase mode to white out the old text, then Add text over the top.

Frequently asked

Do I need Adobe Acrobat for any of this?

No. Everything here runs in an ordinary browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge — with nothing to install and nothing to pay.

Can I fill out a form on my phone?

Yes. Tap to place text and use your finger to draw the signature — it works well on mobile.

Is my form uploaded anywhere?

No. Forms often contain personal details, which is exactly why FileSnap processes everything on your device — the file is never uploaded, and nothing is stored.
