Image size is a choice — here's how to make it well

A modern phone photo is 3–12 MB because it's built for 4K screens and reprints — not for a web form that caps uploads at 2 MB or an email thread. Shrinking an image well means two decisions: how many pixels (resize) and how aggressively to encode them (quality).
